Default Japan PS3 complaints

Many customers in Japan are complaining after several prior-gen games failed to work on their shiny new PS3.

Is this something to do with the firmware update? This means people without online capabilities could be buggered, much in the same way as 360 owners.

Backwards compatability will always be a grey area though. I remember when I got the PS2 some of my PS1 games would not work. Just keep the PS2 is my advice

I think they did say updates would be avalible on disc, maybe in much the same way we get PSP updates that come on some of the game discs.

Im puzzeld tho, cos they said rather than a sofware driven emulator, there's supposed to be a proper PS2 piece of hardware in there and that there wouldn't be problems like this cos of that.

I've read so much about this, it's definitely time to clarify (I put up a news story and updated it yesterday):

Of the several thousand PS2 and PS1 games out there, the estimate is that around 200 games will not work on the PS3. This is very similar to the PS2 in terms of ratio (of around 1200 PS1 games, over 100 don't work on the PS2), and we should all realize that the vast majority of all non-b/c games are obscure titles. Therefore, games like Final Fantasy XII and God of War 2 and Gran Turismo 4 won't have a problem on the PS3.

Chances are, most people don't have too many PS1 or PS2 games in their possession that won't work on the PS3. They simply aren't titles that most gamers would own. But I'll be sure to check this out in FULL come Friday...I've got around 40 PS1 games and 53 PS2 games, and I'll try out a whole bunch on the PS3, from the most obscure to the most popular. As soon as I formulate my own opinion on the PS3's backwards compatibility, I'll post it up. It'll only be a small part of the coverage.

But as one final note, I'd like to point out that it's easily the most fully realized b/c program of the next-gen consoles. The XBox 360s is HORRID, as you not only have to download patches to MAKE certain games b/c, most Xbox games won't work at all on the 360. And furthermore, even the ones that SHOULD work may not play well...I tried Baldurs Gate: DA II on the 360 and it runs so slow it's painful.

I agree, Ben - they have done an admirable job of B/C. That is, if you don't consider the fact that Sony have been bragging themselves up for their complete B/C.

Oh, and I hear that some FF games and some Grand Tourismo games are on the list of NON B/C... Neither would affect me, even if I were planning on getting a PS3

Well, Sony's good at hyping themselves up, obviously. But it's certainly more "complete" than anyone else's b/c program.

I haven't heard that about any FFs and GTs having a problem...but I'll soon find out. I have GT 2, 3, and 4, and every FF on any PS platform. Guess I'll just check 'em all.

I cringe when I think of the 360 b/c. I still get teary when I think about playing Forza. I've still got my XBox so I may have to dust it down and just use that for last-gen games.

Thanks for clearing up the PS3 stuff Ben. I guess it's a bigger thing in Japan as I'm sure they have a lot of fairly obscure games which never make it to our shores anyway.

I think alot of the confusion for me came from mags like official playstation 2, they would use terms like "fully backwards compatible" they never said that Sony had actualy said it but your just lead to assume this is the case. In any case its as near as dammit is to swearing, can't wait for you to report back Ben D.

Yeah, even though this sucks, it still beats the 360's solution (although the problem for that solution is the original Xbox, not the 360). Thankfully this will never happen again and the days of non-BC consoles are over.
