Buying Jap PS3 for use in UK?

Hi,

My brothers work collegue is going to Japan on Tuesday and I am hoping it may be possible for him to bring a PS3 back. I have worked out 50000 yen is £221 pounds, which I would imagine would not be taxable if brought back in luggage.

My question is what is needed to play a Japanese PS3 in the UK?

I take it Pal games will not work on a Japanese PS3 untill a mod is released?

Any help appreciated.

At least an NTSC compatible TV AT LEAST, so you can see in colour, as for power Im not so sure.

this is what i did for the PSX, PS2 and psp.. i wouldnt personally do it for the PS3.

unless you are going to buy every JP ps3 game on Ebay, its really not worth it.
nearly every company that would sell you a Japanese game in or to the UK has either folded or will refuse to ship to the UK.

saying that, i wont stand in your way.

you will need a 60htz TV or higher. trust me, there is no way round this one.
im fairly sure that the powerlead you will need, comes with the ps3, but you will need a convertor to run it.

thats it really.. just remember that 'X' is usually 'O' on the pad, lol.. it takes while to get used to

seriously tho, good luck. with the shortage in Japan itself, you will be lucky to get one, but i hope you do!

post if you do get one, and make us Brits all jealous!

I'm pretty sure the TV is NTSC compatible and I used to play NTSC PS2 games.

I was under the impression the PS3 can play both Pal and Jap games?

There are 240V to 110V transformers on ebay for about £7.50

Are there any downsides having a japanese console such as reduced graphics etc?

The only difference is the picture(not graphics), NTSC is not as good as PAL as you will have noticed on your PS2, get an HD TV however and there will be no difference at all as far as I know.

im afraid that i think that the PS3 is region locked. so Japanese games only. the only thing that isnt, is the psp. being a handheld, being carried over sea's.. this makes sense.

but a home console will be for the county its sold in. so no UK games will work.

but.. if you think you have read somewhere that it does play UK games, go back and read it again! if so.. then let us guys know here!!! because i would love to know for sure!

Just a quick note, you want a converter which works the other way round

I'm pretty sure I read on Sonys website the games will be region free but movies will not.

I have also worked out that it will be cheaper to get a ps3 from America. The going rate for a 60Gb system in Japan was 95000 yen which is about £426 where as in America $599 which is £315 excluding any taxes that may be incurred.

I am not bothering with one from Japan but may try to get one from the States instead.

Import tax sucks ass. If you think of a way round it without going to prison then do so. The gov't screws way too much cash out of us Brits already.
