my brother is really in the whole gaming thing and unfortunately i'm not. the thing is with the new PSIII coming out my mom and i want to get it for him for christmas. i just need some information in terms that non-gamers can understand. any information will be helpful.

all the sites tell you facts about the PS3, but here we are all gamers (mostly) and will have some points of views that my help you, and some things that you wouldnt really get from a purely factual site..

It's the most powerful of the next gen systems and will be the most diffucult to get hold of. Depending on where you are in the world it might not even be released in your country this side of Christmas. If your brother just wants a new gaming system and likes a variety of games but isn't so concerned with having the latest thing then you should maybe consider an XBox 360.

yep, if he isn’t bothered about what he gets, then a Xbox 360 or a Wii will do very well indeed, but of course if he 'really' wants a PS3 (like me) then there is no substitute.

there’s a 20 gig hard drive version and a 60 gig. Personally if you can afford the $100 or so more for the 60gig version, i would get that as it has a lot more things on it.

you may need to buy him another controller (wireless if you can afford it). it should come internet ready out of the box, and if you buy the 60gig version, its HD and wifi ready i believe.

But, you probably need to preorder it if you want one before Xmas, as many many MANY people will want one. so im not saying you should buy a Xbox or Wii instead, because if he only wants a PS3, that will not be good. He may have to wait until shortly after Xmas to get one, but you can probably preorder one now and see what the chances are of getting one for Christmas day.
