I take ratings with a pinch of salt. If the ingame characters are ones your child likes then I don't think it matters what the game recommended age is generally speaking.

Or, I might just stick with the ol' PS2 and go for some of the little kid titles. I don't know of any right off, but I think there are a gob, aren't there?
I bought some kiddie titles a few years back when I was trying to get my youngest sister into gaming (she was like 7 or 8 at the time). They were all pretty crappy and she didn't like any of them (oddly enough, she did really like playing SSX and NFS, and she likes playing Madden with me). You can give it a shot, but if you don't mind spending the money, I think the Wii might work out a little better. It seems pretty kid-friendly and it'd have the added bonus of being fun for you to play too.

My son really likes playing NFS with me, too.

I may dig out the old NES and/or the Genesis, too. There have got to be games in there that he'd like. Duck hunt, if nothing else.

That's honestly probably a great place to start. I've found that stuff like Duck Hunt and Mario work perfectly for that age group.

I also just saw there's a Larry Boy game for PS2 now (or at least it's supposed to be coming out soon, if it's not already out). Of "Veggie Tales" fame...

My kid's huge into Larry Boy right now.
