Default evil PS2 problem

my PS2 has recently become...how shall i say this?...retarded. It won't run certain DVDs and sometimes games. this only really happens with games/ movies that have been in other PS2s or DVD players (my friends games and rentals). this started around the time i decided to put my PS2 in the vertical position for the sake of room. since this started happening, the first thing i did was put it back down horizantal. but sadly, the problem hasnt stopped. usually i can get the game/ DVD to play eventually over the course of a couple days but if i have a rented movie that is pointless. any body heard of anything like this? or just have any thoughts for me? anything would be appriciated.

This might be a dumb question but if you've not tried a good cleaning that would be step 1. I don't think the position of your PS2 will do anything, I heard this arguement over and over and ppl always say this way is better and this way does this...BS I had my launch system in verticle ever since I had it and no probs till of late. When your system 1st comes on and the game tries to load do you hear this little clicking noise?? Mine started doing that on blue disk, the guy at Sony told me it was my laser probaly going bad or something. Do you handle it ROUGHLY by any chance? Maybe something been knocked around or something.

Either use a standard cd-dvd cleaner(whice I use and always works perfectly) or a can of compressed air...don't forget to hold the can at an angle cause if not fluid will come out. PS2 + Wetness = bad.

i baby my PS2 as much as possible so it must be the cleaning. where does one get a can of air? is that a commonly sold item at, say, the hardware store? and is the dvd/ cd cleaner things just a cd of dvd? like how a tape cleaner is a vhs tape? thanx so much for the help!

The disk looks just like a regular CD, but when you flip it there is a little brush on the bottom of it that brushes the lens and cleans it, do that first, dont use the air, there is a chance of fluid comming out.
