Default Splinter Cell

Allright, I just finished the Xbox version of this game, and I came to one conclusion. You must play this game at all costs.

Despite the fact that it's the first game in years that almost made me destroy the console, TV, speakers, and people in the house (the last level is a complete bitch ) - this game also happens to have been one of my favourite games in a long time.

Controls take some time to get used to, but it's not in vain. They get intuitive about 25% into the game, and that's really what's important. Same goes with the camera. It's entirely manual, so you struggle a little with it at first, but then it becomes second nature.

Can't say I have any particular grip with the game. It is hard, it sometimes reminds me of football, struggling for the first down (but in this game's case it's the next save point).

Where this game absolutely excels is the sense of danger, the atmosphere (enhanced by the amazing soundtrack and lighting), the difficulty of aiming, and your character's weakeness (he can't take much more than 2 bullets) all contribute into making the gameplay quite intense.

This one gets a big Sunburned thumb up ( ). I recommend it to absolutely everyone, even if it means you have to get it on the ps2 ( ) - which won't be such a bad thing since you get more levels.

It's also a game made by fellow Liberty Canadians (as you'll notice on the making of portion of the game). Their accents made me laugh.

Now, I'll see if MGS2 lives up to it (I'm 2 hours in already, and it does, though in a much different manner).

Agreed, Splinter Cell is very cool indeed, I also agree on your points about the controls/camera. When I started out I thought they were weird and could possibly spoil the game, but after a while it becomes so natural that you don't even have to think about them.

As for MGS2 I'd have to say that so far I'm unimpressed, though I'm also only a couple of hours in.

Do you like ANY game? I mean, FFVIII, now MGS2? Are you INSANE!!!

Seriously, though, trust me on this- MGS2 delivers. Just don't expect it to be too much like Splinter Cell- it isn't.

Speaking of which, yes, Splinter Cell owns. As for the comment about 'even if you HAVE to play it on PS2', from everything I have seen, they've done a superb job with the port visually.

I said that so far I wasn't that impressed with MGS2, two hours in. Considering about half of that must have been pure dialogue I've barely played any of the game at all, so there's every possibility that it gets better.

Anyway, back to Splinter Cell, how is the lighting looking on the PS2 version? That's something I was very impressed with on the 'Box.

It looks DAMN good. No, not AS good as the XBOX version, but a lot closer than you would think. The Emotion Engine is pretty bad ass if you take advantage of it, and that is what Ubi Soft has done.

Macho- If you don't like cutscenes, MGS2 doesn't really get much better in that regard. It's cutscene intensive throughout the game. You will play more/watch less as you progress, but not much.

I wasn't really complaining about MGS2's cutscenes (though there are a lot of them), I was just saying that though I've clocked up two hours so far quite a lot of that wasn't game time, so I couldn't honestly say I've played enough of MGS2 to form a valid opinion. Sneaking around breaking bad guy's necks is always fun and I am a big fan of stealth games, so there's no obvious reason why I wouldn't enjoy the game. We'll just have to wait and see.

Play the VR missions, then you'll be able to judge.

More Missions = More Play = Better Game.
