Default Metal Gear Acid Review Posted

Frank dropped a wicked in-depth review of the game on us today.

Here's the first bit:
Disclaimer: Metal Gear ACID is not for weaksauce gamers.

Konami certainly disappointed "some people" when they decided to produce a turn-based, card-focused Metal Gear game for the PSP instead of something more in line with the action-oriented games already available for the PS2 and Xbox. Poo on them, I say. Metal Gear ACID is easily one of the best turn-based strategy games to come along in years. It offers a deep and flexible system of deck building and card playing, and, better still, it contains everything that has made the Metal Gear franchise so popular over the years.

For some reason i must disagree with the rating assigned. Your review was pretty much dead on bu to give the game a 9.5 Replay Value and a 9 for Gameplay is way too high imo.

I don't know how far you got so i'm not gonna judge the review. But imo i thought that by the 5th stage the game was just too repetative, i was finding myself reseting my console every couple of levels. I always seemed to get caught, well except for the first stage.

I personally love Tactical Strategy games such as this one. Except there was no gameplay in it. Every level brought forward the same thing. And what really made me mad is that the gaurds would only move if you are within distance of sight or close enough to them. It made me furious that the AI would not move if i was too far, because as i got closer the movement started and i am unable to do nothing but get spotted. Which takes out the whole turn-based procedure. And i for one love games like FF Tactics or Civilization. I even loved Pokemon The Card Game for GB more then this game.

To my understanding there is an Online mode to this game and i would think it would be fun, because no matter how far away you are everyone online would get a chance to move. The worst part is that you have to unlock the online mode which i have yet to do and highly doubt that i will do.

I gave up on the game, it just got way to boring and repetative.

I did agree with you on the story though, i very well thought certain momemts were way too long and not needed.

You have to be mindful of your Cost or the enemy will get a few turns in a row while your Cost lowers to the point where it is your turn again.

Yes i am on track with your comment, but the thing about the AI is that no matter your cost you'll notice if you're far away certain AI's or if even further away no AI will move. You can rack your cost to 20 and no AI will move if you're far. This makes it extremely unrealistic in that it moves as soon as you get closer.

I though the game could have been pulled off a lot better had there been a better story line and stronger AI. By the 5th Stage you almost knew exactly how the AI moved and at certain 1 mistake moves it would cost you the stage and it would really annoy me. As not being able to go into first person and see certain areas underneath you without going makes it even worse.

In Turn-Based Strategy games everything must be seen. Because you are wasting turns when unable to see something. FF Tactics and Civilizaition were never even close to being as bad as this. In no offense to any fans or people that love this game, it is not imo a good game. Another thing that was stupid, was that when i used a 4 block move card and i started moving and all of a sudden cutscene and oh no i just wasted a good card and he only move 1, 2, or 3 blocks which i had no clue was going to happen.

The game is just nerve racking imo, i stopped playing it and doubt will ever finish it.

I don't know where you stopped playing, but the story gets better the further along in the game you get, very well done for a 'side-story'.

I believe they made it so that guards don't move when you are far away so that you can build up your hand and equipment the way you want before you head off to fight. I enjoy it for that fact, that way I don't have to wait for the guards to move around and just spend some time setting up for the mission.

The AI is weak at times, I agree. But then again, at the beginning of the game one of the characters mentions that the soldiers arn't even trained soldiers, just a motley crew of disgruntled citizens. Later in the game you start to fight soliders injected with ACUA and are much tougher to fight against.

The camera sucks.

I didn't review the game, but I know Frank logged 29 hours with it and beat it, so I would say it's safe to assume that he didn't find it boring. I also know you unlock a bunch of stuff, and I would imagine things play out differently each time, since you may or may not have the same cards at your disposal at the same time every time you play.

I know the game's not for me, and it sounds like it's not for you. That doesn't mean it doesn't deserve the score though. I hate real time strategy games, and in my own little world, they would all get a 5 or less - that doesn't mean that's what they deserve though.

I wish I had the patience for a game like this though - it sounds like a great representation of the genre.

Yes but i've said i love turn based strategy games. And you may be mistaken but this isn't a real time strategy game, which i still love.

My 2nd favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy Tactics which is a Turn-Based Strategy game.

This actually sounds like an interesting game but is most certainly not for those who only play for 1 or 2 hours at a time every couple of days.

By the time I get a PSP (if ever) I'll look for a 2nd hand copy.

I know it's not an RTS. I was just using that as an example of a genre I don't like.
