Now that the whole PS3 topic is resurfacing, im not sure what to think of it. I personally think Sony should wait another 2-3 years for it. PS2 has only been out for 3 years. Im really bitter because i own over 60 PS2 games and i hate to think that they will all be next weeks N64 EBAY junk. what do you guys think?

Three years? Nope. It'll actually be five years here in the US this year, and since we're not expecting the PS3 to actually see a US launch this year, we're probably looking at close to a 6-year run for the hardware before its successor hits the market. That's about even with the spacing Sony put between the PSX and the PS2.

That being said, based on some of the software that we've seen for the PS2 so far this year, it's sad to think that developers will soon be focusing their attention on the newer hardware and basically moving on from this generation to the next. Given the probability that software will be more expensive next generation-- and that the hardware may finally eclipse the $300 barrier-- I don't think that a lot of people really want to see this generation end.

The good news is that the PS2's immense userbase practically guarantees a very gradual decline in software releases as we transition from the PS2 to the PS3. Publishers know that there's a large market out there to cater to on the PS2, and we'll likely see a good number of games still coming within the first year of the PS3's launch.

The 5-year cycle for console life is about right... unfortunately, late adopters don't like that too much. That's especially in the case of the XBox, which is being replaced after only about 4 years-- and that's with rapid growth in userbase numbers in the last half of the system's life cycle.

As far as PS3 is concerned I think as far as a gamer's stand point it not a neccesity for the PS3 to be out now, but for Sony as a business decision it might be best to get it out as fast as possible to match the XBOX2. The average gamer will get a XBOX2 cause it's the newest greatest thing out and PS2 is already behind in graphics to the original XBOX and XBOX2 will really make PS2 look like crap. (I know run-on sentence but oh well!)

It's in Sony's best interest to get it out at least in Japan this year and U.S maybe early 1st quarter. Sony had a year head start in last gen to get console sales lead and now with XBOX games selling close to the same margin as PS2 games when Sony used to outsell them 3-1.

As long as great software Like DMC 3 and God Of War keep coming and the PSP support stays strong I think Sony can.

i think you're wrong in your assumptions. like everyone said..its been out for 5 years, going on 6. the ps2 made an excellent run, but its overdue for a better console. its graphics are def behind the times. that being said, there are a lot of good games coming out and i hate to see people drop the great stuff they're doing for the ps2 for ps3...but its what has to happen. in your mind it seems you'd still be happy with the ps1

well first of all, i never even owned a PS1....and all i'm saying is it will suck for me when PS3 comes out because i've put soo much money into hardware and games. If PS3 were to come out tomorrow i'd go get it in a heartbeat. I think YOUR making the wrong assumptions.

P.S- I lived in the middle of nowhere in nowhereville Kansas for 16 years so i most likely would be happy with a PS1

ps3 wont be out till sometime later next year, which will make it at least 5.5 years since its start, so why not release it by then? Though from experience, if im into world of warcraft like i am right now its not likely i will immediately buy one. I didnt do much with my ps2 for a good while after its release since i was wired into everquest on the pc...

That's why I don't build up a collection of games. I have about 15 for my PS2 and roughly the same for my X Box. This way when the new machines are released and everything PS2 drops in value I won't lose out on so much cash when trading up. Might I suggest trading some of your older titles in the near future if you don't play them any more?


BTW, I'm going to be in a bad position with my X Box as I only bought it late last year.

I hope it dosn't come out for atleast 3 years coz i rekon sony has too much crap on their plate..... u know Dual Shock and the PSP recall.

Im pretty much trading games nowadays instead of paying cash, and indeed it works. Unlike the past, though, i dont think i will be able to scrape up a whole lotta $ trading in an old system and games like i have in the past ......
