Pre-Christmas launch for next Microsoft console in both the US and Europe according to latest reports

Xbox 2 will be released this side of Christmas in both the UK and US. This is the rumour currently hurtling around the web after trade mag MCV today broke cover with the story that industry insiders have been gossiping about for weeks - although we first reported on chitchat that Xbox 2 would see the light of day in late 2005 three months ago.

Still, in what's fantastic news for gamers this side of the pond, the usual Euro-lag (that we're currently experiencing with DS and PSP) appears to have been sidestepped with a near-simultaneous release being reported for Europe and the US.

No actual date has been mentioned for when Xbox 2/Xenon will hit shelves in the latest cyber-gossip, although we've heard talk of a November release for the next-gen machine from sources currently working on projects associated with its launch.

Whatever the case, Microsoft won't be discussing Xbox 2 at March's Game Developers Conference and it's suspected that the company is currently keeping schtum about its next console, so as not to adversely affect sales of its existing machine.

Indeed, we're not expecting an official comment on the subject until the annual E3 gamestravaganza, which kicks off in mid-May. But as soon as any more rumours are mongered, we'll let you know.

The general assumption has been that the next XBox will see release this year... retailers have mentioned (off the record, of course) that MS has all but guaranteed this, and now analysts are coming around to the same conclusion.

One could make the assumption that MS is already gearing up for this by shifting their production somewhat away from XBox consoles towards the next generation. It's speculative, but makes sense, given the XBox console shortage in many locations... including locally.

Or before they release Xbox 2, they'll mimic Sony and release a much smaller Xbox so it can sell for realitively cheap, and finally stop taking so much space in people's entertainment centers. Did you know you can fit six of the new PStwo's inside one of those damn things (the Xbox)?

That certainly wouldn't harm sales DF.

My PSTwo is nestled away on a little shelf on top of my DVD recorder.

My X Box on the other hand is sat on top of my VHS recorder. This wouldn't be an issue if the top was level and I could stand other things on it but as it is it's wasting space.

they will never make a smaller xbox. xbox 2 will be out this fall tho

Any concept designs for that on the net yet guys?

I might start saving up now but I'll still be making sure I've got enough cash for the PS3.
