Default EA gives Sega a swift kick in the pants...

EA signs exclusive football deal
Mon Dec 13,

LOS ANGELES, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Monday said it has signed an exclusive deal with the National Football League and the league's players, giving EA sole rights to put NFL players and teams in its games.
Terms of the five-year deal were not disclosed.

I'd say that's a very smart move by EA; Sega was their only contender in the football franchise, and now that threat is eliminated (or severely damaged, at least). I myself am an EA fan, so I prefer the Madden franchise anyways. One problem is that this could cause EA to get sloppy while making future Madden titles, since the competition isn't there (or if it is, it's very limited). Competition is always good to help the team behind the game think of new ways to draw fans in.

I heard that Madden may not be Madden anymore since the contract is almost up and Madden may not renew it. Any truth to it? I hope it is true..please tell me it is true..

I suppose it's a good business move although Sega wasn't much competition in terms of sales even at the reduced price from what I've read. It doesn't bug me at all since I prefer the EA football games by quite a bit, though I'm a bit worried that the complete lack of competition may cause a drop in quality. I'm not sure what all the outrage is about, if they're willing to spend the money and think it's a good move for their company then good for them. It doesn't make them *******s, it makes them businessmen.
