its all quiet mad tho ...wouldnt you agree?

cells helping other cells... to share power etc.. pretty mad.

when they first were talking about the Cell nearly three years ago, they said that if you had say a TV, dvd player and a PS3.. all with the cell technology, that you would be able to link them in order to share the processing power.

maybe that’s where they get their 16 trillion figure from? (its rather large).

but im with you Sunny, its interesting and I will always want to read what Sony etc are doing next or what they say the PS3 will be able to do, but like the emotion engine... best to wait for the hard stone facts before believing it 100%.

tho the best thing about the emotion engine was its name!

would like to see something moving in the way of PS3 graphics..

Pretty mad unfeasable in a short-term timeframe. They're still having problems doing heavy real-time distributed computing on local area networks. The latency is just too big for real-time applications.

1. They who? Not Sony/Toshiba I assume.

2. Now is now. In 2 years those problems might be worked out.

There might not be a need to use the network computing till even later in PS3's life so...

Right. They is everyone. Reasearch in distributed computing is going through quite well, but never to the scale that Sony had made allusions to in the past to hype the Cell. Of course it will be feasible in a medium to long term, but to expect this out of the next generation of consoles is lunacy. If they truly had that technology behind their back, they wouldn't keep it under wraps so much, and for such a long time, and they would obviously be working hard at making a whole new network with telecos.

I don't doubt that the Cell could handle the claims that Sony has stated. And I don't doubt that it's their long-term goal. It could very well be the first mass-production chip of the genre. But distributed computers are not just the chips and computers and nodes. The a middle architecture is just as important for distributed computing than the processors it uses, and it's the network connecting those computers. And the internet isn't up to that level in terms of latency and performance.

And that leads us back to rumors being rumors and hype being hype.

Hype is good.

PS3 will be more powerful than PS2 and that's most important.

And hype is good.

I disagree. Hype is what makes expectations. Expectations is what makes people shit on things that didn't meet theirs because they were perhaps overblown. Expectations cause things to be "overrated".

Expectations are good.

There's can't be such thing as no expectations. People always have expectations, some have higher some lower.

If hype is a product of expectaions, then it's unaviodable.

Like I said, hype is good.

Hype makes you specualte, gets you excited, gets you pumped, makes you anticipate. Hype is good.

While on topic, here's a little bit more optimistic piece of news:

Expectations wouldn't be so bad if most people rationalized them.

Just a net made of 16 co processors.
I guess someone at last wokeup to the idea that onchip cache of at least 4 to 8 mb increases performance and a larger on chip bus makes for very fast calculations.
But.
Expect a wait of a year or two before developers learn how to work it properly for games.
