Question PSP questions for staff here at psxextreme

Hi.
What are the performance envelope specifications for the PSP as concerning direct current voltage at minimal values and at maximal values?
(yes I read where it said 3.5 volts DC for the battery pack ).
But what are the real minimal and maximal values?
I.e. can it run at three volts DC?
Can it run at four or even four point five volts DC?

Another question:
What are the advantages or disadvantages of making a liscensed product versus an unliscensed(SP? ) product for the PSP?

Thank you.

well, these stats are what you read when Sony know EXACTLY what they are releasing to the public, as of yet we know pretty much 85% of what the PSP will be like, but until its ready to roll the specs may change.

im not PSX Staff, but I can try to answer your questions... (lol)

"What are the performance envelope specifications for the PSP as concerning direct current voltage at minimal values and at maximal values? "

well, why would you want to run something that costs near £200 on a higher power level? Madness....

but like most appliences yopu probably could run it slightly higher than the spec, but obviously would be dangerous to do so.

"What are the advantages or disadvantages of making a licensed product versus an unlicensed(SP? ) product for the PSP?"

not quite sure i know what you mean.... but obviously with licensed product you get backing from Sony, and the UMD that Sony will be using will not only just be for the PSP, you can imagine Sony making other products that take the disk... not quite the same as the SP or DS.

Anyway, the PSP is a handheld PS1.5; it’s not your GBA Cart or your DS... its completely different and will probably attract a different customer base.

Im sure I haven’t answered your questions, but at least ive posted

A typical performance enhancement trend is noticeable at a higher voltage.

And after reading the specs. the conclusion is that better battery performance is posible.
But I am very confused as to the two hour spec. using the UMd since it also has a memory stick option.

the two hour spec is probably down to what its playing.

From what I gather if you play games then its anything from 4-6 hours possibly even up to 8.

DVD's on the other hand will suck your batts dry.

is that what you mean? or have I missed something?

Yeah,you missed something.
But.
Unless I can get to E3 to show what I mean it is a moot point.
Since trying to talk to Sony is like talking to a wall in trying to request cost of a dev. kit. for the PSP. to upgrade the firmware and also show improved duration times when viewing movies far above the two hour spec. that was quoted.
Oh well, worse comes to worse I can always import and modify a japanese PSP and make sure my product has the:
"NOT licensed nor authorized by Sony"
warning on it when at E3 (if I ever get there someday ).

if I can get some money up.. I will be buying a Japanese model seeing as its region free.

you saying you want to buy a Dev kit PSP? lol, you will not be able to buy one of those for at least a year if that.

the only way you could get one is if you worked for a company that makes PSP games, but that’s obvious and you probably knew that.

maybe go to E3 and steal one?

or you could um....

maybe you should just buy a PSP and not worry about the power, im sure it will have a mains adapter.. and most trains have a plug socket these days, so the only time you will need to watch something over 2 hours would be in a car.

maybe you can buy extra batt packs? and just swap over?

maybe Sony will improve the batt life for when it comes out in the States or the UK?

best thing is to wait til it comes out then go on some forums and ask your original question.

The best forum for that would be at Lik-Sang, seeing as they are selling it.

Thank you,but the main problem is that I am not interested in buying something ready made, but instead I prefer to create a solution .
And if it works for me then I will be considering a booth at E3.
Thank you.
