How do you know it's a forced storyline? Is it a possibility that Square had the sequel planned from the get go? I for one am semi optimistic about the concept. The first title left much to be desired in terms of plot, and just went straight to hell in the last third. In fact, I remember posting various plot related questions that nobody was capable of answering. Perhaps the sequel will be able to provide more insight on some of the plot aspects of the original. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

No. Here is the timeline :
2000 - "We will start focusing on the Final Fantasy Brandname"
2001 - "Final Fantasy XII will be the first Final Fantasy to have sequels"
2002 - "FFX will have 2 sequels" (one for yuna, and one for rikku).

And just playing the original game indicates otherwise. There is no FF whose ending is just clear and set to stone as it was. Now, they blew it out of the water (I got partially spoiled, what a shame this storyline is).

Just because that's what was released doesn't mean that the titles weren't planned from the beginning. Besides, even if they weren't planned, it could still turn out to be amazing. Take Chrono Cross for example.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not praising Square about this decision. I just thinks we should all wait and see before we pass such harsh judgement.
