Today happens to be a pretty good day for Sony fans -- three of those questions were officially answered as part of SCE's announcement of the launch plans (that'd be 19,800 yen [which is about $179-199 in US dollars, and is a good indication for the US price plans], 4-6 hours, and December 12, 2004), and on the fourth question, we finally have confirmation of long-running expectations: the PlayStation Portable will feature a region lock encoding system, but that this lock system will not be used on games.

I'm waiting for the U.S. version. The batt life might be alittle better and some kinda updates or something.

Give Sony a sec to iron out all the final bugs (if any) for the U.S. release.

That's still great news for importing games from Japan though.

That's okay because most people have multiregion DVD players anyway.

Basically it's the territories of the world broken into different sections.. North America, Europe, Asia and so on..

When a product releases,( i.e. game systems, cell phones, movies) it is encoded with a "region" as in area of the world where it was intended to be sold and bought.

Every place in the world has a different code whice WILL ONLY MAKE IT WORK FOR THE SPECIFIC REGION it was encoded with.(I'm not trying to be an ass by making that bold lettering or ne thing)

Therefore if you buy a PS2 from Japan, and live in America, the "American" games you buy here in the U.S. won't work on the "Japanese" PS2. Vice versa of course w/ all the different regions.

Then again that is why they made "mod chips" whice will let you play Japanese games on your American PS2. (and vice versa again) I don't recommend theses unless you are a die hard fan of some Japanese staples that do not release here in the states and can read Japanese.
