Post Playstation 3 - will use 50GB Blu Ray

Sony Vice president Kiysohi Nishitani, Sony Vice President puts his balls on the table and has revealed in a daily Japanese paper the disc format that will be used by the Playstation 3.

He named the DVD heir Blu-Ray disc technology which capable of storing about 50GB per disc.

What is unclear is whether the discs will come in caddy style cartridge holders, (which will slow down the process of piracy for a year or two.

I am still wary of this though, will it make games cheaper or more expensive?
At least less likely to get disc read error (damm you sony, I buy a ps2 soon after it is released and for it not to work, only makes me want a xbox more then a ps2)

Does a game need that much storage space? maybe the PS3 games will have better than real quality graphics so it will need the space...

And let the crazy propaganda begin.....

It won't make games anymore expensive then they are. It's a not a cartridge, therefore there is no need to worry. In between the plastic is the actual Blu-Ray disc. The plastic is only for protection purposes.

I'm sure that no game needs that sort of space, unless they indend to be in full 6.1 sound (and such), with alot of 1080i/720p videos inside. Data capacity is far less of an issue when it comes to generating 3D graphics (unless the ps3 has no texture compression like the ps2...). Anyhow, 3D graphics have more to do with the computational power of the machine as opposed to the storage they come from. Storage is only a necessity for aspects that aren't computed in real-time...

See this for example... http://www.theproduct.de/ Great 3D tech compared to the size of the data.

This could mean many things:

Higher definition/Superb image clarity
Dolby 8.1 Support (yes, 8.1, not 7.1)
Insanely clean audio
Larger texture capacity

And other crap.

good. I heard they were doing DVD (like the ps2) so they could do backwards compatibility, but then in psm I read that the PS3 will do PS2 games by emulation. So this is going to be cool not having to change discs. If the PS3 can do graphics anywhere near the Final Fantasy :spirits within (awesome movie IMO) I'm a happy camper.

I'm merely interested in what it holds on the audio departement / texture variation (they'll be able to hold more, but then again it's unknown how the ps3 will perform in term of textures).

And hopefully you'll be able to save games on the Blu-Ray disks. Aren't they re-writable?

The extra space will not only be used for the CG/FMV compression. It will benefit image clarity all together, because developers will be able to fit higher quality textures that will in turn allow for progressive scan support.
