Did I say Metal Gear SOLID? Noooooo..... I said Metal Gear, which was released in 1987, roughly ten years before Tenchu came out, but thanks for playing!

Well, there was only one Metal Gear, and only one Metal Gear SOLID. I didn't think I would have to specify something as clear as that. Here, let me try.
"I would also argue that Metal Gear, as in the FIRST Metal Gear, you know, the one that came out in 1987, like 15 years ago, not Metal Gear Solid, cause that only came out in 1998, so it couldn't be the one I was talking about, was revolutionary as well." There, is that better? ![]() |

But Ryan, how many people on this forum ever refer to the ORIGINAL about anything? I merely thought you were trying to shorten things up with "Metal Gear". I guarantee I wouldn't have been the first to make that mistake.

Anyway, the reason why few people cite Wolfenstein 3D as a revolutionary title is because it went by largely unnoticed, perhaps because it was a shareware title rather than a proper release. It was only when Doom came along as an officially released product that people took notice, which is why Doom is the title seen as an industry-changing game and not Wolf 3D. Hell, any game of that genre that followed Doom was originally referred to as a 'Doom-clone', before it gave way to the term 'first-person-shooter'. It's not enough just to be revolutionary, you also have to be noticed. |

Besides, I also referred to Metal Gear Solid in the very same post, separating the games, so it should have been pretty clear what I was talking about. |

I apologize. Very often I forget to read between the lines.

*plays the world's smallest violin for Tosser*
Now, to get back to the ACTUAL POINT of this thread, I would like to make the following clarification: It is easy to say that no game is revolutionary because every game made is based at least somewhat on previous games. While I disagree even with that, let's take a minute to think about this logically. According to that kind of thinking, movies weren't a revolution because they simply took the thoughts, ideas, and concepts of music and books and transferred them to another medium. Of course that is ridiculous. Movies provided something that books and music could not, and to say that isn't a revolution simply because movies are a byproduct of technology is absurd. If that were the case, then NOTHING in this world has ever been revolutionary. Not cars, airplanes, nothing. It's never been stated that a game has to be completely different to be revolutionary, but rather that it has to fundamentally change either the way games are played, or how they are perceived. That's all the word revolution means- when a fundamental change is produced where the results of said change are felt for years afterward. |
