Totally. That's the beauty of Shenmue--its plodding tempo notwithstanding there's just something innate about the plot that drives you to play and to explore the city as fully as possible, and moreover the action is just so different--and just so personal, I guess--that you feel guilty about not talking to every person on the streets every single day. I like a game that frustrates me. It just holds your interest differently. It's a game that hinges on suspense and mood and not so much on the gratification of being done with it and through with the action. I wish I had an Xbox. Seriously, I was satisfied, but I wasn't the least bit happy when I finished that game; I only wanted more.
Exactly. It was different, and it challenged people to think outside the normal gaming lines that we draw all by ourselves. We've come to accept this traditional form when it comes to games, and finally a game comes along that dares to redefine those lines. What happens? It is met with unbridled criticism. Yes, the game had its flaws, but at least it had the balls to be different for fawk's sake.

Dmitry and I both love to express our discontent with Shenmue. Maybe I'll pop in the second one and sway my thoughts?

Hmmm, nah.

there were lite rumours of Shenmue2/3 heading towards the PS2... with Sega dividing up their games, I know once upon a time it was on their list.... but since all this bloody confusion over the Xbox getting S2 or S3 and blah blah blah... attention to the PS2 version has died.

I would love to see this on the Playstation, as imo its the perfect PSX game, its deep and thorough and its a fkg good game.

some how I don't think my dreams will be answered..

Bryan - playing Shenmue2 on DC is not a problem at all. All you need is the game and a boot disk, and I found the import at a local store. And my local stores NEVER carry imports.

And I agree with Bryan's and Ryan's standpoint on the game. It's incredibly flawed (I have no complaints whatsoever about the scores it got - they are reasonable), but underneath it all was something that was compelling to me. And I don't mean the process of looking for people, doing the same part time job over and over again, but I mean it in the way you immersed yourself in this virtual world in a way not done often prior to this series.

And I thought Ryo was a pretty crappy character... that is until you reach disk 4 in shenmue 2, where they actually develop him into something more than a teen that wants to avenge his father's death. Not much gameplay on that disk, but definitely the series' highlight (so far).

Actually suzuki has already announced Shenmue 3 for the Xbox. And as much as i hate the series. I still don't think the PS2 would be able to run the game. I may be wrong, but then again who really knows.

I dunno, I reckon it could, but who knows.

if the game comes on three disks or more, there isnt any reason why it couldnt be on PS2.

but I think there is pretty much no chance it will come on the PS2/3... probably go the same way as DOA.

but its not like we are missing out, we have VF4 to its DOA3... and I know which one I will be playing for years to come, maybe we will get some thing to rival Shenmue?

I think the reason I bang on about this from time to time is because if you look at the type of games for the PSX/PS2..Shenmue fits right in.

Never mind, hey ho and all that.

Actually, the PS2 would not be able to run Shenmue very well. The Shenmue games used a lot of textures from the DC and the PS2 can't do the same textures as the DC. Shenmue would have to be completely re-worked to look better on PS2. Grandia II is a great example of this. I do think that the Shenmue series is perfect for Xbox mainly because most Xbox fans like it.

But, I do think that Phantasy Star V and Shining Force IV should be made for PS2.

fair enough, as we have seen on MGS2 being ported from the PS2 to the Xbox... porting is not good.

so if they ever was to do a Shenmue for the PS2, you would expect a whole new story or a complete re-do.. because (as you have pointed out) it would be crap.

as for Phantasy Star V... no news, but they are working on Phantasy Star 1, 2 and 4.. which I agree will be cool.

They'd just have to redo the graphics engine. And AM2 are extremely good programmers. I'm sure they could pull it off if they invested enough time. But it's probably not worth investing that time, that's the problem.

Default fun?

Shenmue was about as fun as rubbing my Hemmeroids on 10 grit sandpaper.
