Hahaha! Overrated? Shenmue 1 sold like shit for the DC in the US. It met very mixed reviews, and pretty much every reviewer pointed out it's flaws for what they were when the game came out. Basically the same story with the US release of Shenmue II. I think it may be selling a little better, but probably not even a quarter of the "overrated" Metroid Prime.
Agreed. I thought Shenmue was brilliant--experimental, engrossing...doesn't get any better. It's true, though, that a lot of critics had a lot of problems with its tempo, so I'm not sure how you could consider it overrated...

Metroid Prime is very overrated. The targeting system is flawed. The exploration gets redundant after a while, and strategies for defeating bosses were too similar. Maybe if I play the game a little more I'll change my mind, but 6 hours into it, I'm with left with question marks over my head saying to myself "this game is supposedly one of the best games of the generation?".

Frankly, TimeSplitters 2 spits on Metroid Prime. Better (!!) targeting system, more action packed, quicker turn around responses, etc (if only Metroid Prime controlled like TS2). My MAIN gripe with Metroid Prime are the controls. I hate the aiming, not that it's hard or anything, it doesn't lock onto an object that is to the side or behind you. So I'm getting shot at repeatedly, in order for me to kill the enemy I have to turn around 180* and then lock on. The targeting system was just damn flawed, to this day I can't get adjusted to it.

As far as Shenmue goes, the game is ridiculously stupid. Here's a guy who's trying to avenge his father's death. Instead of doing so, he goes around looking for sailors, and all of that other jazzy shit. Give me a break. Shenmue is just as overrated as Metroid. My Shenmue II is still shrink wrapped, for God's sake (I didn't buy it). Every blue moon you may encounter a fight, but that's an ocassion that is so rare that it's almost worthless crafting the fights out of the VF engine. Shenmue's depth is a pitiful ZERO. All the game is is an interactive story. Shit, if there was some ACTUAL gameplay elements involved, like purchasing weapons, upgrading, etc. etc. etc. then the game may be worth an ounce of my attention. Otherwise, Shenmue is the suckiest bunch of suck that ever sucked.

Gotta' go, my weiner forum members are about to attack me.

Timesplitters 2 spits on Prime? Too bad they're not even in the same genre. Prime is an adventure game, Timesplitters 2 is an FPS. Enough said.

Keers, I agree with you pretty much all the way. While I'm not a huge fan of Shenmue, I agree that it was revolutionary. While fundamentally flawed, it offers a unique experience that can't be found in other games. The first time I played through it, I found myself compelled to unearth that next piece of the puzzle; it was almost as if I were as driven as Ryo was. The whole experience of 'working' while playing a game was weird but fun. On the whole, Shenmue is worth playing simply for its novelty. No, it's not the best game out there, but it certainly has enough redeeming qualities to warrant a purchase.

Arnold, you say 'he's supposed to be avenging his father, but all he does is go looking for sailors and shit'. How else is he supposed to find his father's murderer? By beating people up? How does that help him?

Sorry if my memory on the subject is dry, but how did the sailors have any integral part in the game? Not only that, but he should've been able to kick more ass. The murderer obviously has hench-men, a gang, etc, Ryo should've been fighting more in order to get rid of his opposition and get closer to his father's killer.

Shenmue is FAAAAAAAAAAAAR from revolutionary. No game, thus far, is revolutionary.

Yeah, I disagree, Arnold. You've got to realize that the magnitude of the game kind of precludes a quick fix to the plot.

Totally. That's the beauty of Shenmue--its plodding tempo notwithstanding there's just something innate about the plot that drives you to play and to explore the city as fully as possible, and moreover the action is just so different--and just so personal, I guess--that you feel guilty about not talking to every person on the streets every single day. I like a game that frustrates me. It just holds your interest differently. It's a game that hinges on suspense and mood and not so much on the gratification of being done with it and through with the action. I wish I had an Xbox. Seriously, I was satisfied, but I wasn't the least bit happy when I finished that game; I only wanted more.
