Hey Keers, I assume you know the difference between 'conotation' and 'denotation'; at least I hope you do. The fact is that while the denotative meaning of bathetic may well include 'anti-climactic', it is not how the word is used.
For example, gay means happy, carefree, does it not? But if I were to call you gay, would you interpret that to mean that I thought you were a fun loving guy? I doubt it. The English language is full of such discrepencies, and I would think a learned man such as yourself would understand and appreciate that. Either way, I agree with you in that we need something else to argue about. You hate FFVIII, I love it, and I think everyone knows that by now. It would be nice to see a topic in these forums where you actually agree with someone. I doubt that will ever happen, but we can always hope. |

1) GameSpot isn't as biased as people say...quite the opposite.
2) Ryan, you're so gay... ![]() |

Is English your second language, Ryan? To rebut your poetic analogy, bathetic is different from "gay" in the sense that it isn't common enough to have had its meaning altered by colloquial speech. It's a literary term with a fixed definition. Still, by no means do I want you to stop; I have to get my jollies somehow and frankly it's hilarious watching you argue with the dictionary. Last I checked "green" was the linguistic occurrence we've arbitrarily assigned to the color that marks bushes and grass, but certainly through the vernacular it's come to be used as a slang term for money (or marijuana, I suppose, to speak more toward your interests). Is it still okay to call the grass green, Ryan?
For the record, I don't hate FFVIII. I've made it pretty clear that my feelings on that game have changed. I still think it's in the doldrums as far as the Final Fantasy franchise is concerned, but my expectations of that series are different from my expectations of the RPG genre as a whole. And as for your whimper that I'm not affable enough for this forum, I suppose you're right. Next time an opinion with which I don't agree is dimly expressed as fact I'll only pout in quiet resignation and weep that you barred me from putting my feelings into words. Honestly. Individuality isn't a bad thing. You also misspelled discrepancies. Edit: That's it. No more on FFVIII and no more on this nonsense. I keep telling myself everybody's familiar with my feelings but I can't resist involving myself anyway. It's just the nature of the debate, I think, but it's gone on too long already. I think we've beaten more than the topic to death. Truce. By the way, I'm well aware of the irony inherent in holding up an olive branch in a sickeningly hateful post, but I couldn't part with the words. You'll have to forgive me.

I wanted to end this, but apparently you're one of those people who hangs on to his sentiments like a man grasping at his last straw. Bathetic is a rarely used word, and over the course of years, it has come to embrace one meaning; the one I described. You can sit here all day and tell me that I am arguing with the dictionary, but the fact is that you are arguing with the English language itself. You're ascribing a meaning to a word that hasn't been used in several, if not hundreds, of years. Gay was only one example. Of course you would take that to be the only offering I had. That is what I would expect from someone who obviously does not have a fundamental understanding of the English language, but rather a 'word a day' calendar. I think I am safe in assuming that 'bathetic' was a word of the day last week.
I'm done with this. You have my PM. You know what I had to say. If you really feel the need to respond, then do it like a man and respond to my PM, where I addressed the real issue here. |

I started playing on FF8 the other day aswell, then I started on FF9 also. Is that coincidence or am I a skitzo and macho my other personality. I don't really like FF8, I've never actually got past the 2nd disk, I've never actually had the second disk mind. I thought, this was even when i first played it, that the faces were too flat, there is no texture, this is on cut scenes, I know FF7's weren't any better, but these ones just don't look that good. I don't want an arguement to spawn over this, these are just my views. |
