"One month from now, Sony Computer Entertainment will reveal the technical specifications of its PlayStation 3 console. This year’s Games Developers Conference, to be held in San Jose, USA, between March 4-8, is the time and place for one of the most exciting announcements this side of Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance SP being endowed with a screen that is actually useful for playing games!

The announcement is expected to be made by SCE manager of developer relations Mark DeLoura, though this could not be confirmed.

The news was leaked to us from the highest-level third-party development sources available. The credibility and standing of the individual who told us this convinces us that it is correct.

What’s more, this revelation has sparked intense rumour that Sony will make a consumer announcement at this year’s E3. It is thought that a full consumer hardware plan will be unveiled, with a Japanese launch coming within 18 months of the show. "

That's an interesting point Kefka. Who knows how long it will take developers to make games in the future, but with advanced gaming consoles comes advanced game-making software, etc., etc., etc. you know what i mean........But ya, the PS3 will be quite the console, I'm lookin forward to it, but not eagerly anticipating it just yet.

I'm not all *that* excited about PS3. I'm holding off my anticipation until I can see what it can do.

Rumour has it that its meant to have no disc drive and you buy games online. Something around those lines anyway.

I heard something like that too, but I thought it was as well as the D drive. the PS3 probably will have a HDD so downloading games would be an option, im sure... but with thousands of PSX and PS2 games on shops shelves and at home, it would be pure madness not to make it backward compatible, as that was one of the stronger selling points of the PS2.

all will be reviled come March 4th.... and I hope its big!

Well, technicallt that 18 months until the PS3 would still fit in with their original plan of a console very 5 years. Since the PS2 was released in Japan in 1999, and NA in 2000...it all works out. Japan will get PS3 in 2004 (or early 2005) and we will have to wait a touch longer.

Personally, though, I think if SONY awnts to remain dominant and out of the clutches of Microsoft, they need to hold off on releasing specs. I guess developers need to know what they will be working with, but I'm sure Microsoft will be listening anxiously.
