Default Are mod chips illegal?

I'm looking to buy some imports to play, and I was just wandering if it is illegal, or is it only illegal to burn and play backups.

I'm 99% sure it is illegal, but I could be wrong.

I don't think there's anything wrong with importing software. If there was, tons of stores would be closed down by now.

US law may be different to UK on this but it is my understanding that Mod chips are illegal. If you want to play import games, you have to buy an import machine.

as explained in other posts, your console isn't really your console. And the games you buy.. they're not really yours.

in a way we rent from Sony, M$ etc....

Sony, Nintendo and M$ etc.. will not allow you to put chips inside their machine. it is illegal.

But saying that there isn't anyway they will find out.. not unless you drop it down the stairs and then send it back to Sony asking them to repair it, only to find its been chipped.

there are disclaimers that nothing from the Sony corp is to be messed around with, copied, resold.. blah blah blah...

so yeh, its illegal.

but what you do with it is your call. I know of so many people who have ****ed their machine with chips, and a few who did manage to put chips in, but now the chip is so old.. new games don't work.

if you buy the machine who's country you want games from.. buy an imported machine. if you want cheap games that you can buy for $2 over the internet.. then get a better job..

You're right Dillon, we're paying for the right to use the hardware/software. The 'licence'.

yep, read any small print in your console manual, the back of the game you have just brought 2nd hand from EB....

none of it is really ours..

ah well, I guess they just cover themselves in such a way that if anything stupid was to happen, that they are totally covered in every way shape or form...

I guess you would if you were them.

They actually got a way of finding out if you got a modchip or not. It is called "DNAS." It only works online though... .
