Default What's happend to videogames?

Indeed, a good question. Pardon the language I'm about to use, but I'm going to be very straight forward in this thread. When I look at the industry these days, I see utter shit. Plain and simple. That's why I ask this question, Goddammit. I'm a gamer, I always have been, and at heart, I always will be. It deeply saddens me to fathom the way things have gone. There used to be so much pride involved in videogames. Now, the all mighty dollar calls the shots. What sells repeats, what doesn't is forgotten. I suppose this is the way all things go, so I can't really act surprised. Though, I have always believed that videogames were something that nothing could touch. That they were in their own little world, away from the general public's evil eye for marketing. I suppose I was wrong in my belief. They were in fact exposed to a much broader fan base, thus corporate evil profits, and gamer good suffers. At least I have the memories of past days. Days filled with Crono and his time traveling companions. Days with Shadow, and his fierce dog interceptor as they battle their way though the world of ruin. Days with Alex and Luna, side by side. Yes, these days are what I treasure most, as this tainted cycle continues onward.

I feel that way about console gaming, but i'm really excited at what PC gaming has to offer right now. I'm getting further and further into PC's as time goes buy. Consoles to me are a thing of the past.

I concur. PC gaming is the only way to go at this point.

Yeah, PC gaming has so much more to offer. And there isn't 3 different companies going for your money. Thats why I like it. There is none of the sales and system war BS to put up with. Just gaming bliss.

The simple answer is that Sony happened to video games. With the Playstation gaming became cool (or at least seen as acceptable), and more people started picking up consoles. With so many gamers out there who were likely to buy more than the latest episodes of Star Trek or do more than playing Dugeons & Dragons there was suddenly an untapped source of money.

Us guys who have been playing games since we were young have seen it happen. Kids who wouldn't of dared utter comments about the latest Sonic or Mario game or who wouldn't have been able to tell you what an Amiga was were suddenly talking Playstation, and everything changed. Decent companies that I always looked too for decent gaming either perished or were severely reduced because they didn't adapt, while others embraced the new age and became the big money-hungry companies of today. At least that's how it happened over here in the UK. My nerds-eye view, as it were.

It doesn't mean decent games are no longer made though, they're just accompanied by a lot of crap.

I wouldn't go so far as to blame it soley on the Playstation. In fact, I believe that more blame should be attributed to the Dreamcast. To me, that was the crossing over point. I'm not saying that the Playstaion didn't get the cogs of fate turning, I'm just implying that the Dreamcast opend things up. It was a technology break through that carried a lot of hype. All of the sudden online console gaming was upon us, and the masses became involved. Hence we have what we have today. Gaming anarchy.

As I said it might just be how it played out in the UK. Everybody had a Playstation but very few people went for a Dreamcast. Sega weren't exactly in great shape then and there weren't many people who were about to give them another chance after a string of mistakes as long as theirs, and Sega were after all a video game company. The Sony brand carried a lot of weight.

I'm not saying I blame Sony, all they did was see the potential for growth in the video game market and went for it. As you may have noticed they did a very good job, gaming is far more accepted than it ever has been. But is also means that there are more companies out there now who are just in it for the money, and a lot of developers who are there to make games can't get themselves noticed because of the advertising campaigns and brand associations of the bigger companies. In the end it's the small companies who fade away, or are bought up by the bigger companies.

WTF? Sony happened? Are you out of your mind?

Here's a tiny little fact: Nothing happened to videogames. You may be out-growing them. Take a look back at how many ****ing shitty games were released on the SNES. Everybit as much, if not more, shitty carts were released on the SNES, Genesis, or NES in comparison to the PSX, N64, and (to an extent) the Saturn.

Games like Chrono Trigger still exist, it's called Chrono Cross. Magical games still exist and they are:

GT3
Halo
Splinter Cell
Tekken Tag
Soul Calibur 2
...ad naseum...

Why am I doing this?

Ah, yes. I'm here to set the facts straight.

I'm with arnold. great games are either out now or just around the corner.

Manhunt
KillZone
Prince of Persia
Whiplash
XIII
Gran Turismo 4
Fatal Frame 2
Time Crisis 3
Castlevania:Lamnent of Innocence
Fallout:Brotherhood of Steel
Harry Potter:Quidditch World Cup
Jak II
Roadkill
RPG Maker 2
SSX3
TMNT
Tony Hawk Underground
Crash Nitro Cart
Freestyle Street Soccer
LOTR:return of the king
Socom 2

And most of those come out before December.

as far as pc gaming goes....it's just way too much trouble and money to put into a machine that plays video games. So many things need to be taken into account before you even buy a game.

I like going into a store and buying a game like gran turismo 3....knowing full well that on my PS2 it plays just as well as it does on any other PS2, in other words, it doesn't play any WORSE than others play it.

I've always hated PC gaming. And I always will.

I go into a store, see the PS2 section and know that all the games there will work on my PS2.

I go to the PC section and have to examine the 'System Requirements' to make sure that my machine isn't too slow (or too powerful) to run the game.
