Default Playing "gaming God" for a day...

You know, I was sitting here thinking, whilst drinking of course, about what the "perfect" game might be. You know, that one game that we all want, but will never get, because it just isn't possible. Then I started asking myself, "why not? Why can't we have the perfect game?"

The answer came to me in a flash, even in my intoxicated state- much like movies and books, the talent pool is too segregated. Just as John Grisham, Dean Koontz and Michael Chricton are not going to collaborate on a novel, neither are Hideo Kojima, Shigeru Miyamoto and Hironobu Sakaguchi going to collaborate on a game.

But what if they did?

So then, after a few more drinks, I started asking myself, "What would the perfect game be like? What would it have, and who would make it?" So I made up a "dream team" of sorts, and thought about my "perfect game".

I started with a roster:

Executive Producer- Shigeru Miyamoto (Zelda, Mario)- for his originality and ability to produce innovative games.

Producer- Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy series)- for his ability to tell an amazing story.

Director- Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid, Zone of the Enders, Policenauts)- for his attention to detail and his incredible ability to create atmosphere in a scene.

Motion/Animation- So Toyota (Metal Gear Solid series)- Look at the character models in MGS2 and tell me I'm wrong.

Battle director- Hiroaki Yotoriyama (Soul Calibur series) Soul Calibur; need I say more?

Driving director- Kazunori Yamauchi (Gran Turismo 3: A-spec)- The best driving game ever made; only makes sense to hire the man behind it.

Music- Harry Gregson-Williams (Metal Gear Solid 2/Snake Eater), Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Cross) and Nobou Uematsu (Final Fantasy series)- I'd love to see the best of east and west combine in what could only be described as a blissful arrangement.

Side quest/miscellaneous- Yu Suzuki (Shenmue series)- The man knows how to keep you engaged in extraneous activities for days on end (GD knows what I mean)

So... that is my dream team. Now, it is up to you, the forum member, to come up with the story. What would a game, with these people behind it, be like? Obviously, we're talking about a game being headed by the best of the best, the "creme de la creme", so to speak. What would you, our reader, expect?

I'm planning on making an editorial based on this subject, and it is you, the reader, who will determine a great deal of what I write. What is the common gamer looking for in the "perfect game"? Did I miss something/someone? Did I miss an important genre/development aspect? If I did, let me know. Otherwise, lay out your "perfect game" with these stipulations. Your answers, if creative enough, will find themselves in PSXE's latest editorial piece by yours truly.

Here is your chance to earn that free game! Get creative, people! Tell me what you think, no holds barred. Get creative, get DARING. Don't worry about reasonability, as this is purely a fantasy piece, obviously.

Alright, kids, show me what you got!

The perfect game will never exist -- unless you have a holodeck like on StarTrek.

Just to make sure...

You don't have one of those do you?! Because if you do, then take this post as my lips being fixed dead center of you right ass-cheek, because I love holodecks -- not that I ever used one, or seen one, or know if they even exist.

Err, I'm sleepy, leave me alone!!!

Well since i believe that this is an opinionated thread, i will try and add something a little later but i just wanted to say that i believe the greatest game, has already come out.

To me there are only 3 things needed in a game:
1. Perfect Story - Mostly a Dramatic Story with an Un-Answered Ending
2. Great Gameplay
3. Music (The Music needs to blend in with the Story)

To me the greatest game ever made was Final Fantasy VII.
Every since FFVII came out there has never been a game even close to compete against it in my opinion.

It's not only my favorite game but i believe it is the greatest game ever made.

Ermm...Kazunori Yamauchi is the man behind the whole Gran Turismo series. The guy you listed isn't even part of Polyphony. He's just some US tool Sony uses when they bring games stateside. You already ****ed up your game!

I've thought about this a ton. And I don't really know what they would come up with....because I am not them.

But what I do know is what My friend and I have come up with.

It would Be a MMORPG.

The game could be made by all those above...but I would also throw in Rockstar North. For their groundbreaking improvement on open ended gameplay with the GTA series (yes even the first and second....)

This game would also need a worthy art director...someone with fresh new ideas that have never been seen before. Who might that be you ask yourself? ME of course!

So, this is the game to end all games. I mean This seriously.

You would have a create a character mode, and with THUG inplementing the digi cam face modeling. It would of course be in this one so your character looked exactly like you.

After you make your character, you go outside of your house, apartment, cardoboard box, picnic bench....whereever you decide he should live. And then you do whatever you want. GTA style. but with more options. Feel like playing football? Go recruit enough people...and have them follow you in you stolen (or purchased) cars to the local football stadium and start a game of perfectly executed football.

This is where we'd also need the expertise of EA Sports crew....as well as for the other sports you might want to organize...basketball...hockey...soccer...etc.

Feel like skateboarding with a bunch of friends? That's why Neversoft is in on the team as well.

Feel like stealing your car instead of earning money to buy one? Well if you get caught by the game cops doing it...you go to jail...and it's not an instant re-appearance...you get penalized for getting caught...maybe something like getting locked out of the server for like 3 days...

Feel like slaying a dragon and going on a long quest? well that's why there is a fantasy area on the map...a huge area filled with monsters and fantastical landscapes. Get a team together and go out.

Find an open spot in the country and start building yourself a mighty castle, train knights....who knows? Someone might buld a castle down yonder and try and take over your kingdom!

See what I mean when I say that this is the game to end all games?

Any game you could ever want to play...is included right here in this one giant MMORPG.

That's a hell of a question, Ryan. Brace yourself

People I'd Add/Remove:

I'd probably have Peter Molyneux involved somewhere, any game ideas he's thought of have been great, even if they were sometimes let down by the actual game.

Miyamoto wouldn't be a definite, not because I don't love the guy but because he tends to prefer the cartoony, child-friendly content rather than the gritty and often bloody realism favoured by the rest. Bad guys are always monsters rather than just humans on the other side, a definite 'black' to defeat with your 'white' hero. Plus Nintendo protagonists tend to be mute. Depending on the direction the game takes his presence could end up being a hindrance rather than a benefit. I don't know, that was just what occured to me when his name cropped up...

Storywise, I think I'd want some of the guys from Blizzard involved too. I love the whole back story behind the Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo games, as well as the actual story in the games themselves. The worlds they create around these games are amazing.

Not being a fan of driving/racing games I wouldn't bother with a driving director, just including driving sections would prevent it being a perfect game for me.

My Perfect Game:

My perfect game would definitely be rooted in a fantasy setting (making the driving director pointless anyway, unless there were lots of horse/cart sequences). It would probably be an RPG too, maintaing some kind of balance between the linear Final Fantasy-style story-driven RPGs and the BioWare-style RPGs (where you're free to shape your character's appearance, actions and allignment throughout the game, but which always end up being very light on story because of it).

As I dig character creation the Create A Character feature would be huge (I must spend at least as much time in Smackdown's Create-A-Wrestler as I do playing the game), but instead of simply choosing a voice set (which is all you choose in the BioWare games) you would choose the personailty too/instead, so your character could be an 'I hate life, kill me now' Squall type, a bad tempered Barrett etc. That would not just affect the dialogue but also the way the story plays out, different personalities would be more inclined to make certain choices than others. The race you choose would also affect the personality, the beliefs and customs of that race wold influence the options open to the character.

There'd be different paths the story could take, not just good (group of heroes travel the world fighting the bad guy) and bad (group of bad guys travel the world building an army, causing anarchy and being pestered by groups of heroes) but other 'grey' paths, people acting more on selfish motives than good or evil. Probably not too many though, the game would be huge enough as it is without a whole load of alternative ways to play through.

You'd start in different places depending upon the race you choose for your character, and the order you choose to visit the various locations would affect the story. Enemies would therefore have to level up as you do, simpler that way.

I should probably stop here, I could go on for far too long on this (already have ). The basic idea would be that there would be a FF level depth to the story, but one which is free to grow around the player as they make various decisions, with all kinds of different events that could take place in each location depending on the personality, allignment and choices of your character, as well as the current progress in the game.

Of course that would be incredibly impractical, the amount of potential for variation at every step would make the game ridiculously huge. The choice of events and dialogue at every location would practically require a new DVD for each place you visit. But hey, if reasonability isn't a factor then that's what I'd like to see...

PS - Who is doing all the visual stuff in this, is that already included in one of the roles?
