Unlike FFX-2, however, the characters haven't been butchered, and reduced to something they weren't in the prequel, at least not by the way they are dressing.
I guess the idea of a scantily clad Cloud prancing around after a Sephiroth who kept going into Charlie's Angels-style poses didn't have the same appeal.

I'd assume that some kind of game will come out of this, whether it's just a remake for the PSP or some kind of prequel/sequel. Oh well, Quiter and Gamers were almost right :P:

From Gamers:
Square Enix's Development Studio 1, the team led by director Yoshinori Kitase and responsible for Final Fantasy X, plans to unveil its latest project at the Tokyo Game Show this coming weekend, as was announced last week.
The identity of said project is of course tightly under wraps, but a few scraps of information compiled by the modern-day wizards of Quiter point in an interesting direction: towards a spinoff of the ground-breaking Final Fantasy VII.

The first oddity has to do with Square Enix's recent Final Fantasy merchandising efforts. Since early this year, a lineup of licensed widgets paying homage to the Shinra characters -- the business-suited thugs from early in the game -- has been available in Japan. That campaign is continuing now into fall, and Cafe Reo, the character-goods manufacturer which produces the bulk of Square Enix's FF merchandise, has announced a new premium for purchasers of licensed stuff.

That premium is pictured to the above left -- a limited-edition bag bearing Final Fantasy X-2 on the one side and silhouettes of the Turks and company on the other. It's likely that this is the same premium that will be given away to customers at the Square Enix shop booth at TGS this weekend.

The second oddity may be found on the Japanese Square Enix web page, where the link to the Final Fantasy VII has disappeared from the archived list of FF games. The FFVII page is still on the server, but there's no link to it from elsewhere in Square Enix's archive (This was also true of the European site, but not the US).

This is mostly idle speculation, but it's something to keep in mind leading in to Friday's announcement, and the prospect of the Turks starring in their own games is a pretty amusing one. Stay tuned for details when the deal goes down in Tokyo.

Personally, I don't believe that they'll stick to this DVD alone. I mean, think about it. They know FFVII is their fan's most beloved game, and I really doubt that the movie wouldn't lead into something else.

Sunny, what site did you see this on originally? Only one of the game sites I look at regularly had caught wind of this (GI) and they didn't have the full picture, just a small cut for their news. Apparently I should have been keeping an eye on somewhere else...

It's real. It's all over Japanese sites and other forums. It's just everyone is unsure what this is, so we're all waiting for tomorrow to report on it.

Aye, I'm not saying it's not real, I was just wondering where Sunny found it. I'd been looking out for info since I heard there was going to be an announcement made that might be about a new FFVII game, but nothing had come up in the usual (English) places.

As for what it is, GI apparently had the text fully translated and have said that it is definitely a movie that will go straight to DVD, and not a game.

I found it on various Squaresoft message boards. I haven't seen it on actual websites either, but I haven't checked websites since last week. :P

I found out about the story right when I went online in the morning. I posted it on the site I'm a staff memberon and put it up quick before most other sites did. The news has me extremely excited since FFVII is my favorite game of all time. I will buy the DVD. I just hope it has the best music like FFVII had.

While I find the composition for FFVII to be grand, the sample quality is often unbearable... FFVI sounded as good if not better (on many instances) - and to a certain degree, FFVII's soundtrack left me dissapointed.

That style of composition deserves higher sampling rates. Yet another reason for a remake.
