Even in the original comics the Foot were just referred to as the Foot, there was no reason given for it:

hmmm...my memory of the Foot from the orginal cartoon is limited to only a few facts:

1) They were pussies
2)There was apparently an unlimited number of them
3)They looked cool as hell
4) The action figures had bent legs (like the Shredder action figure) and was damn near impossible to get to stay up. Mastering the art of getting your Shredder and Foot clan figures to stand up on their own was an art that took years to perfect.

hell yeah they were impossible to get to stand up!

I had the Super Shredder toy from Turtles 2....it stood up fine.

Ah yes, the Foot, evil ninjas who couldn't actually balance on their feet properly.

In the cartoon they were robots, weren't though? Allowed the turtles to behead them without causing psychological damage to kids worldwide. In the original comics (like the movies) the Foot were human, and the turtles would come out of a fight with them drenched in blood, which as a kid would have been infinitely cooler to see on TV than broken robots.

i beleive you are correct about the real people in the movie and the robots in the show. good stuff. i love the 80's catch phrases:

Yeah I know, Leo never used his swords just as Raph never used his Sais. They both have deadly weapons and yet you don't ever see ONE blooddy decapitation or someone impailed by a sai, always drove me crazy. You saw plenty Donatello bashing people over the head with his stick thing though.

And yeah now that I think about it they may have been robots, that sounds right. I seem to remember them always getting kicked in the head and then exploding in a shower of sparks. Which meant either A) The turtles kicked damn hard or B) Foot ninjas cost like 10 bucks to make (which is understandable since Crang or what ever the brain guys name was had to spend all that money of the Technodrome which was about as badass as badass gets.)
