You guys are too funny.

I just don't like (in a game striving for realism) having to fight a 'Boss' that is nearly invincible (ie - it takes five grenades and 200 bullets to the forehead to kill him).

If you're gonna have a so-called 'Boss' fight in a game like MGS, make it a challenge of a different sort. Make the challenge lie in trying to track him silently, or place a blow-gun dart through a small chink in his armor (just ONE, though, not 20 or 50 or 100). Or, better yet, improve the hand-to-hand combat for games like these and make the Boss battles more about skill. It would be reasonable if they had maybe as much as twice the resilience to harm as the playable character, but it's just ridiculous when their resilience is 10 or 20 fold that of the character... It detracts from the realism of the experience.

It's not just in video games, either. It always drives me crazy to watch movies that do this. Ever notice how the bad guy who's nothing more than a businessman gets pitted against the Navy Seal at the end of the movie? Somehow, even though the Seal's been breaking bad guys in two like toothpicks the whole movie, he ends up having a major struggle with the suit? Give me a break. It's not suspensful - it's moronic. Just like with the video game Bosses, the movie Bosses detract from the experience.

Honestly, none of you agree with me???

p.s. - MGS and MGS2 were VERY good games, but please: 'flawless'???

edit:

Where did I say Boss battles are "pointless or stupid"? I won't deny feeling some satisfaction at beating Bosses, I just don't think they belong in some games for the reasons above.

2nd edit:

I'm on a roll Here's another thing that irks me about SOME Boss battles: the following cut scenes. Case in point: The Boss battle with the biker gang leader on the roof in Headhunter. Personally, I killed him using proximity mines and the hand gun. He survived the first two mines (plus many bullets), but the last mine got him. Then the cut scene begins, and he's just sitting there - apparently in no immediate danger of death - talking to me! How preposterous! Kind of brings to mind the sequence in MGS2 when the mad bomber guy gets defeated... (*runs and hides, fearing the devout MGS2 zealots*)

Ok.....so let's see.

In Metal Gear solid...you're fighting against a special tactics force with a vampire...and such...the boss battles make sense....of COURSE a vampire is going to be hard to kill.

Of COURSE a guy wearing almost complete body armor is going to take lots of shots....

some things are less realistic...but it's a game.

Don't worry buddy, you're not completely alone on this one.

In MGS2 the point is to create an absorbing tactical espionage action game, the stealthy 'one man against an army' style of play is good because of the level of realism in it. If a lone special agent was actually sent in to these places then there's no way they could charge in guns blazing. Or rather they could, but they wouldn't be able to do it successfully for very long.

Big boss battles, vampires and the like appearing in games like this actually counteract the realism and (along with other aspects of the game) really stopped me being able to get into the MGS titles. I really tried to enjoy the game, but I kept running into things that made me think "well that's just silly, hopefully there aren't many more things like that in the game". It reached a point where I simply couldn't be bothered to try and justify the silliness any more, especially seeing as I was playing through Splinter Cell at the same time and couldn't help making comparisons.

That's why we have Syphon Filter. This game is a good damn challenge for everyone, the game is real too, like if you shoot a "boss" in the head, he's dead, no shoot him 100 times !

Wow lots of replies on this topic.

Well SCII's Weapon Master mode is feeding me lots of challenge. I finally learned how to impact gaurd, which was required to get past one of the levels.

Oh and I agree with whoever said challenge is good as long as it doesn't involve fighting the controls. Tombraider...ahem.

The last TR game I played was either 2 or 3 on PSone. Didn't like it...

I played, and mostly enjoyed, TR (original) on PC. The platform jumping and such was much easier on the PC than with the PSone controller.

I could control Lara perfectly in every tomb raider game...but angel of darkness....man.

ONE TIP FOR THE NEXT GAME. LARA CROFT IS NOT SOLID SNAKE.

They ruined the game trying to make it like MGS....it came off cheasy.

And what the heck was up with this...in the commercials i see lara running around blasting with two pistols...but I never got a second hand gun through the whole game....
