I only recently started it turning off via the standby method, but in the 2 years or so before that I simply flicked the switch in the back I never had any problems so who knows.

I always use stand by, but my friend never used it before, and doesn't want to. His PS2 has a hella lot of problems, though.

when

I insert a cd
-Turn the power switch on
-press eject very gently
-insert the cd
-press eject again
-go to browser and select the cd
-and play (sometime I don't go to browser and wait for the cd begin itself)

I replace the cd
-press eject very gently
-grab the cd by my major finger then I put the cd in his case
-insert the other cd
-press the eject button again to close
-and press the reset button very gently
-and play the other game

I Turn off my PS2
-hold the reset button for about 3 secondes and go to standby mode by itself
-and turn the power swith off

I left the PS2 by standby mode
-when I go to my girlfriend house and come back to finish what I start
-when my mom call me to eat
-.......
It's not a big problem to leave the standby mode on

So it's like that, I treat my PS2 like a baby

I would imagine standby could be a problem in the event of a power outage. A surge protector might be a good idea if you leave it on all the time. ...that's what I would do with my several hundred dollar investment.

^^^^ how I used to do it.

Now I just leave it on stand by. I do use it quite a bit so it seems silly to me to keep turning it off.
