Default beta Fire Warrior 40k doo dar War hammer thing...

I was lucky enough to pick up the Beta version on Saturday, been playing it all weekend, though as its for testing online, the single player game is restricted to a single level.

anyway, first impressions.. its good. its very good.

graphics are spot on, as its made by THQ, im wondering if its using the Red Faction 2 engine, as it does look better, and feels as solid.

Anyway, its a bizarre game, as its meant to be a mixture of RTS,RPG and FPS all in one, though you don't see any of this in the single level that you play, its a pretty full on shooter.

Basically you have a gun, you go forth and kill kill. your mission is to meet at the extraction point and help out your buddies, and to do this you there's a lil bit of fighting outside and inside to contend with. when your outside, your in a deep trench with a war happening over head, bomb blasts hit the ground only feet away from where you stand, so you don't stick around for long...the atmosphere is a little bit like MOH in that beach landing level right at the start, its just chaos. don't get me wrong, its not as mad as MOH's level.. as that would be very hard to beat. But what they do in WH:FW they do it well, you do get a feel of urgency and the threat of troops ahead aren't the easiest to kill.

Once you have gone through the trench and in through a few buildings and you have all the keys that unlock the doors so you can escape.. you have to kill the boss ship, which was hard, but managed to do it. and then you meet with your own ship... and that's it.

You can only carry two weapons at a time, in the demo I must of tried out about 6 of them, and all very cool to use, with some having an alt fire.. which is always nice. like RF2 you can throw grenades with ease, and movement in general is smooth. one extra added weapon is your Katana blade. I guess its a default weapon for the race that you are playing. I didn't use the sword much, but as this game will be online, I can see some superb sword only matches happening.

the multiplayer supports online, split screen and I-Link.. so I have tried out the I-Link and the split screen, all very good.

I would of tried the online, but my mates modem was acting up... Boo Boo...

all in all, I think this is one to look out for. my only reservations is that the level of difficulty is about a 7 on a scale from 1 - 10. I found it challenging and fun, though AI isn't the greatest but still can be a handful.

One of the best things in the game is your life bar, shield. its weird... you have a life bar that stays up all the time (unless damaged), but you also have a shield bar that recovers its self... so even if you have some sort of energy left, your shield (even when damaged) will heal its self if you duck and cover for 10 secs... this makes playing a slightly harder game more fun, cause you get the impression that at least you have a chance.

With the promise of the game being deep and the whole history of War Hammer 40k, I think this could be a nice little stop gap until Killzone comes out.
this could be the only FPS worth playing online... until something better comes along.

I've been looking forward to this for a long time Dillon.

I like the idea you can only carry so many weapons at once as this is more realistic than the usual 4 handguns, a couple of rocket launchers and a Gat gun without any impeded movement

apparently you can carry two weapons at the same time.. like RF2, but I didnt use any single hand guns, so I cant be sure.

its a very solid game, it will be tweaked before release, so it will be interesting what they do with it.

OPSM2 have a demo next month... probably this month in the usa OPSM.

I love the I-link feature! more FPS games should have this.

what I look for in an online FPS is a decent amount of characters to choose from, lots of interesting areas.. maybe with some interactive stuff.. many weapons with most having an alt fire.
plus I like to be able to customise the game, so you can have certain weapons and pick ups...

Timesplitters 2 would be perfect, but its not officially online.

War hammer address's at least half of these things, so I think it will be a very good online game. certain things you cant seem to do ...like choosing what weapons you can use in the game and the 8 areas that you can choose from (four in deathmatch and 4 in T/D and Capture the flag) are interesting areas, but not as good as Half Lifes areas.. which imo are some of the best playing fields in any FPS.

I think it will be the best online FPS for a while, and it does sound like more instant fun than Tribes... but I haven't played that yet.
