Lightbulb Should Changing Franchises Be Split Up?

This is a new experiment I've devised, it is spontaneous and a seat of the pants idea. Basically I'm asking an editorial question on the main site and tying it to a poll in the forums to try to increase back and forth interest.

The idea behind this editorial is simple: a lot of fans of franchises like Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Mass Effect, Dead Space and plenty more miss the "roots" of the gameplay. I'm asking if you think it would be a good idea or not for developers to go ahead and split them into different worlds, one that continues to appeal to mainstream trends and one that stays true to the foundations of the franchise.

There are fans for both, so why leave either side out? Please vote and express yourselves either here or on the main site. If folks think this is a good idea I'll try to do more things like it.

I personally don't think its a great idea. I mean I'm a fan of change and I do think things should have fresh ideas.. but when it goes wrong it stays wrong. Look at Red Faction, a pioneer in geomod tech, a superb story with a great FPS package... whet in the wrong direction in RF2 but instead of correcting it they changed direction totally and it was not the game we all loved (mostly).

I don't think in this day and age companies could afford to run both sides of the coin to keep everyone happy.. possible the COD market could handle it, but there aren't many who could see a return from one side to fund the other.

Im a firm believer in that if the game has lost its way then rather than jumping ship to make something new and 'exciting' that they find out what they are doing wrong and fix it. seems that most of these changes are because of what genre is popular at the time.

so yeah, I obviously like change, I like choice too.. so normally I would of probably voted YES, but I feel that they really could not keep two types of game running for more than one outing, and most likely would choose the one we all love to chop out as no one seems to know how to fix their own games these days because there seems to be a very small percentage of game devs that actually listen to their fan base. ..imo

Cool initiative, World!

In regards to the topic I believe it's a much better idea to create a new IP instead. New, fresh IPs! Can't have enough of that.

Seriously, had they for example forked Fallout into one RPG leg and one... Strategy? Or multiplayer FPS? Or anything like that, it would make my eyes and ears bleed.

fallout is a good example, when it went fps a lot of people just wernt interested, but they pulled it off and imo was an amazing game. but if they had released fallout 3 and then another fallout as people loved it.. what would people of liked more? where would we be?

i say fix what is broke, either work on what went wrong or reboot the series, worked in fallout just not so much in red faction.

I can't be sure. It really depends on the feasibility of the idea. In other words, developers and publishers would have to be willing to produce TWO high-profile titles and these days, it's hard enough to get one out the door.

However, that being said, maybe it's important to remember that many of the splits would include old-school ideas for the veterans, right? So in other words, they'd ideally put out that Lightning Returns junk and at the same time, they'd produce a true turn-based RPG with a world map and all the old traditional elements for the old-school lovers, right? That's the theory, if I understand it correctly.

Well, the latter project would only require a fraction of the resources Lightning Returns took, so maybe the idea isn't impossible. I mean, we see a lot of ridiculously in-depth downloadable titles on the Network that are reminiscent of old-school goodness. Look at Rainbow Moon, for example.

... But it was *not* a shooter. First Person perspective, yes, but no S.
