I'm playing through FFVIII again, and I just got to the part where:

***SPOILERS ABOUND!***

Squall and Rinoa meet up after he rescues her at the Sorceress Memorial and they travel to Edea's house. Squall and Rinoa talk in the garden field, and Rinoa is concerned about being a sorceress. Squall, to himself, says:

"Rinoa, even if you end up being the enemy of the world. I.... I'll be your knight."

Call me a romantic fool, but this is the most touching moment in gaming for me. It SO signifies why FFVIII is a great title, and if you have played the game, then I am sure you know what I mean. I LOVE the love story in FFVIII, and it is even more compelling than the love story between Tidus and Yuna in FFX. Of course, seeing as how Kitase-san directed VIII and produced X, numerous similarities abound.

***END ABUNDANT SPOILERS***

I liked the time spent between Squall and Rinoa in FFVIII. Despite what others may feel, that was the only thing I liked about the game, and I still liked the game a lot. That says how much I liked Squall and Rinoa, the best characters in videogame history.

I remember watching that when I played the game a while ago. I'll admit that I really liked the story of FFVIII but I absolutely hated the gameplay elements such as draw system, GF's, weapon upgrading, and side quest. I still think Cloud is the best main character and Yuna & Tidus are the best couple.

Of course people love Cloud; he has nine foot tall spikey hair, and we all know that is the most important thing in RPGs.

I never really found Cloud to be that interesting a protagonist, especially going up against a compelling and interesting antagonist in Sephiroth. That, and it never really made sense why these people were all together with Cloud.

"Boy, I sure have changed."

See, Squall, and most of the characters in VIII actually grow over time, which is the point of a good RPG. The characters in VII, with maybe the exception of Barrett, do NOT really change that much.

Cloud evolved very much in FFVII. In the beggining of the game he was all:

"Let's just get this over with so I can get paid". He didn't give a shit about anything.

Towards the end he was a compassionate team leader who was dedicated to kill Sephiroth and avenge Aeris. I'd never compare Squall to Cloud. They're two different characters, both incredibly well developed. They're my two favorite FF characters, as well. They were deep, full of mystery, they never wore their emotions on their sleeves, they were powerful, and at the same time dedicated.

Squall and Cloud, living in harmony in the universe of Final Fantasy.

Barret Wallace

Cloud Strife is my name on most sites I post at. I decided to use Barret Wallace because someone else had the name Cloud. Anyway, Barret is a great name for me. I do think Squall was cool but he seemed a little too quiet to me.
