Question Where is console gaming headed?

Where is console gaming headed?

With Dreamcast we had the first 128bit graphics engine in a console. Soon after we had Nintendo's Next Gen console(the "cartoony gfx" Gamecube), Sony's PS2 and Microsoft's(a computer for a tv, XBOX). All of these included 128bit gfx processing. Microsoft basically rounded up a special gfx card from Nvidia. Where will these consoles be in the next 10 years?

With console gaming growing and PC gaming staying consistant(people playing) where will they meet. Console gaming already has or will soon have PC like graphics. Will the console world surpass this? I mean PC graphics haven't changed THAT much and they've been out for years. Consoles have been though. STarting with their 8 bit Nintendo, to the XBOX with its Nividia graphics card.

So my question lies in this:

Will console graphics meet PC graphics, have they already, or will they surpass PC graphics?

Personally I think that because of the competition now that Microsoft has entered and Nokia (with its allies) are competing on a new system, the console world will not only have alot of choices but will have better graphics than the PC in years to come. Reasoning? Well mainly competition will push the console world into a new world of graphics. The PC has no competition(MAC has the leading graphics but have the games REALLY gotten that much better?

Anyway, I wanna hear what you have to say.

Sorry for the long post

100 - Number of Pentium 4 chips it would take to equal the reported processing power of Sony's PlayStation 2 successor - PlayStation 3.

That's all I have to say.

It'll be the same as it has always been. At the beginning of a new generation, the consoles blow the PC's graphics out of the water. Most innovation is seen in console games. Then about midway through, the PC slowly starts to get on top. Consoles start to age, and most innovation has been taken care of. We're currently entering that phase. Then new consoles are announced, taking the crown.

new graphics accelerators for PC's are always being released. new consoles get released every few years. i think PC graphics will always be on top.

Or dare we even say a 64 bit CPU.

Console videogaming will always go through the phase of outperforming PCs for about a year and then back to the back seat of the ride they go. Such has been true with home everyconsole released. The Xbox is holding up quite well, which is no surprise, seeing as how it's PC based architecture (sue me on the spelling, I'm in pain) is still relatively close to what we are using in our PCs right now.

Next-generation consoles will outperform PCs for about a year or so, until a new graphics card hits the shelves and makes the new consoles once again look inferior. Though, that's kind of hard to imagine with all the power the next wave of consoles will have...then again, we thought the same before the PS2 hit. *shrug*

well considering intel wont even hit 4ghz this year....

anyways..like others have said..consoles will prolly always be a bit faster for a period of time..then get wasted as pc's get better...but who cares..we're so close to realistic stuff..its nuts...sooner or later...we're not gonna know the diff between real life video and a video game...what happens then...we'll only need one system for the rest of our lives?!

Once someone comes up with a 3-d display, today's processors probably won't be able to run them. So, we'll start all over again in the graphics department (think of a holigram with the visual quality of a NES). But people will still buy systems like that because they'll want the 3D.

Then, after that gets figured out completely, someone will invent an IMMERSIVE 3d display (wouldn't peripheral viewing make the FPS genre explode?)....

Maybe we'll eventually just get eye implants that utilize our optical nerve and our brain's processing power to run our games. That being said, I suppose the 'frame rate' would vary from user to user

I thought da "Cell" can draw processing power from other "house appliances", processors, servers, etc. ...

I thought I'd read about this somewhere

Kinda like aliens, I need to see it to believe it.

The architecture is completely different anyway. It's like comparing a Hitachi Super computer or something to a 32-processor Intel cluster. The Super computer would run desktop apps like shit because it's not designed for that, and the Intel cluster wouldn't compute nuclear reactions as fast as the super computer.

I can't wait to read some in-depth info on the "Cell". Bus widths and speeds; allot more on the chip itself.
