I don't have a PS3, but it depends. You might be able to do so or might not. Though it works for laptops you have to remembers that drivers need to be installed for it to be recognized. So long as the PS3 can recognize the device properly and you are able to install it via the Network Installation that the PS3 has, it shouldn't be a problem to use it.
I believe the PS3 is running Linux, i could be wrong. Best thing to do is search Google.
From the search i've done, currently there is no info of any USB WiFi adpaters working on the 20gb PS3. Again, you can try it.
