Tenchu 2 was a prequel as Rikimaru dies at the end of Tenchu 1.. or so we thought!
Rikimaru and Ayame are both Azuma ninjas, a clan that Lord Gohda uses to inflict revenge or to seek out foes outside and within his own people. so the fact that lord Gohda has asked you to deal with the merchants is just like the missions in Tenchu 1, where he asks you to do something and you do it.. a lil like 'The Hitman' in that respect.
Lord Gohda isnt happy with reports coming back to him about some merchants who are taking the piss.. so you are sent to sort them out (Ayame).

to answer your question is to delve in to the Ninja world... when Rikimaru was thought to be dead he was in fact in a long ninja sleep, but was awoken by deep disturbance in the realm. Rikimaru could sense that things were not right and that the evil that he once fought and despatched to the portal was starting to reappear.
I cant spoil it too much but you learn all this in about three or four missions in the game. Ayame is still hired by Lord Gohda which is why she was there after Rikimaru as his sense are far more sensitive than that of Lord Gohda and Ayame. lots of people are surprised to see Rikimaru and a lot do not believe that he is who he say's he is...
it does sound a lil pants, after writing this.. but it does make sense when your playing, and the game is full of wonder with ' is this the real Rikimaru or..... '
its very cool.
oh... and the ninja skill im getting for every 9 stealth kills are really cool, I can now hang on ceilings and have acquired 'ninja sight' which is really helpful.
like I say if you liked tenchu you should adore this game... right down to the blossom off of the trees... nice!
