people know about it because they translated the manga in that Shounen Jump magazine which is quite popular with the little ones.
though, i first heard about naruto when i was shopping at this anime store at a mall. someone wanted an anime with ninjas in it and the clerk recomended Naruto and the rest is history. heh yah, i dont want to type out a big story about it.
