If you have played the original, you will notice that some of the abilities and skills have different names. They have re-translated the whole game from ground up, giving it a more proper 'old king&knight English'. Which fits the time line the story is placed in.

the Ivalice timeline goes like this

"(Quoted from GameFaqs.com)
FFTA* –> FFXII –> FFTA2* –> FFXII:RW –> FFT –> Vagrant Story -> FFTA* -> FFTA2*

*The beginning of FFTA takes place in a modern Ivalice setting, but the bulk of the game takes place in a “fictional” Ivalice. This “fictional” Ivalice is sometime before FFXII. FFTA2 is confirmed as being after the events of FFXII, in the real Ivalice (but like FFTA, starts out in modern Ivalice)."

My personal progress
I have played to the end of the story now, I got all the 'secret' characters etc. including Construct 8, Cloud, Balthier (FFXII) and Luso (from up coming FFT:A2 on NDS) Got Beowulf and Reis aswell.

Short about Balthier and Luso, Balthier is one of the most powerful characters you can have this time around. He is faster than Ninjas.
He brings with him the most powerful gun in the game, plus his personal skill 'Sky Pirate'. Got the same abilities as Mustadios, in addition to have thieving abilities
Luso is almost a copy of Ramza, got all the same squire abilities.

I also got the Dark Knight job on Ramza, it is the similar to the job Gaffgarion have, but including 3 more moves, plus extra abilities or support and movement. As Gaffgarion only had ShadowBlade (HP drain) and Dusk Blade (MP drain).

Hope I didn't spoil too much. I just like this game very much. Like lot of others here do.
