yeah, loved Vandal Hearts one and two... (was there a third?)... and played Disgaea on the PS2, but not like my mate who clocked up over 500 hours on Disgaea1, and the only reason he stopped was because he had to start no.2 before the PS3 version came out

You know I'm going to say FFT, even though I've never played Jeanne D'Arc. I know the latter is supposed to be great but...well, it's FFT.
And if you've played those games, than you'll be fine. FFT is a little different - it has a more involving gameplay than any of those other titles, just because of the Job System - but you've already got the gist.
And no, there was never a VHIII, unfortunately. I really liked VHII; it had some of the best writing I've ever seen.
