Microsoft could solve this by:
Hacking the harddrive price.
Ship new machines with in built HD-DVD.
For existing machines release the HD-DVD and start making games for it rather than just having it for movies.
Alright, all the above may piss off a few of the existing owners BUT I'm sure they'll swallow the hassle and cost if it means we can still get the big new popular titles in all their glory. Non-harddrive users is possibly the first hurdle Microsoft have to overcome if they want to keep up with Sony.
