The PS3's internal HDD is a 2.5" SATA 5400rpm, its the same type you find in Laptops/notebooks. Make sure its not an IDE HDD and the speed isn't 7200rpm. It might be possible that a 7200rpm will work but the PS3 may only run it at 5400rpm anyway and 5400rpm one are cheaper. I do not know what the max size is for the PS3 but you find the max size for these HDD's are 250gb. I just looked at my email to activate my account for these forums and seen that I have an email for my HDD I just ordered tellling me there out of stock for a few days, bummer. Its a Fugistu 160gb 2.5" 5400rpm SATA notebook HDD for £60 ($120) thats including P + P. I think its a good price, hopefully.
There are many insatallation guides around and its simple, the PS3's manual has instruction but then it give you legal documentation about how its possible you could lose your warranty. So I suugest swap the HDD back if you ever need to use the warranty.
