Well watching DVDs on your HDTV is a massive improvement over standard def TVs, don't get me wrong here. It's much cleaner and looks better (if your TV's or DVD player's scaler do the job well). However, you're never going to get the clarity of a pure HD signal, because the DVD's image is lacking those details that make HD images look good.
If anything, DVDs were the 'scam'. They were originally sold as being disks for HD and flat panels, and as high definition disks (which is true compared to VHS, but not compared to the HD standard).
