In MMA if you're not skilled in Jujitsu/Wrestling you're not going to be a very successful fighter. Most MMA matches go to the ground at some point, and at that point an understanding of ground based martial arts is an absolute must. Most MMA athletes train in either Brazilian Jujitsu or wrestling.
For stand up arts, any decent, straightforward striking art is fine, such as boxing or kickboxing, which are the two most common IIRC. You're not going to see a bunch of people trying to use kung fu or tae kwon do or any of the more stylized arts, because they're not really practical in these situations.
Most really good fighters are some mix of wrestling, jujitsu, boxing and kickboxing/muay thai.
