That and the fact that games are completed in their native language and then released. After that they are converted to suite other regions.
I'd rather wait 6 months for FFXII and get it in English than get it the same time as Japan and have it in Japanese.
As far as UK-US releases are concerned there is the issue of converting from NTSC to PAL or vice-versa.
