I have this problem.
One day, I was playing Madden and my screen froze. I figure whatever, it overheated, I'll live. The next time I tried to turn it on, I got the three red lights. Not good.
I checked for all my connections and nothing worked. I called X-box support, and after getting crapped on by outsourcing, I got someone who could speak English to tell me that Microsoft no longer offered free repairs for launch consoles after January 5th of 2007. Mine broke in early February.
I can overheat the console to make it work again, but that's just a temporary method that will kill my 360 if I do it it too much. Besides, it only lasts around 20 to 30 minutes before it freezes again.
I could send it in to Microsoft for repair, but that's $140 that I just don't have. I could try to fix it myself, but the chances that I'll just waste the rest of my 360 is pretty good.
What sucks is having $550 worth of games, accessories, and a monitor in your room just collecting dust.
